BACKGROUND :

To adopt, attain and sustain Universal Health Coverage (UHC) plays a pivotal role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. With just 10 years to fulfil the SDGs by the year 2030, collective action toward the achievement of UHC will gain further momentum at the global level through G20 summit, the UN High Level Meeting on UHC and in Africa through TICAD 7. While countries and global community have made stride in accelerating the progress towards UHC, various challenges in financing for health still remain, which include insufficient domestic resource mobilization, uncoordinated development assistance for health and inefficiencies and inequities in the health systems. Strengthening health-financing system is promising pathway towards achieving UHC, by increasing the investment in health and improving the use of resources. It will ultimately contribute to ensuring the sustainable access to essential health services. This side event will explore how countries are taking actions to reform health financing towards achieving UHC. Highlighting the stages of policy development and implementation in health financing reform, the event will delve into country strategies to increase the coverage of population, and current efforts in revenue raising, pooling of funds, purchasing of services and designing of benefit package. At the end, participants will share good practices and lessons learnt from the discussions to drive further progress on the way to achieving UHC.

OBJECTIVES :

- Discuss effective options for developing strategies and institutionalizing sustainable health financing systems to accelerate the progress towards UHC. - Share the hands-on knowledge, good practices and lessons drawn from country experiences. - Shape the way forward to strengthening health financing at each country.
