Dr Oliver Groene is an internationally recognized leader in health service research and implementation. He is Member of the Board of Directors at OptiMedis AG, a population health management company that develops regional integrated delivery systems in order to improve health, care experience, and lower costs. At OptiMedis he is responsible for Analytics, Research and Innovation.
He is also Honorary Senior Lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he previously held a four year tenure designing and analyzing large-scale health care data bases and used the insight gained to inform clinical decision-making and evidence-based health care management. He is an invited fellow to the 2019 Sciana Health Leaders Network.
His interests cover research, practice, and policy on topics such as performance assessment and management, patient safety, chronic disease management and person- and patient-centered care approaches. He works closely with policy makers, purchasers, senior clinicians, researchers and other high-level stakeholders. He regularly advises the World Health Organization, the EU, research teams, hospital groups and health insurers on topics related to quality and safety in health care.
Oliver Groene served as principle investigator (PI) or co-PI on various large scale grants, with total research funding over 9 million EUROs. He publishes widely in leading clinical, quality-of-care and health policy journals (H-Index=36) and served as Deputy Editor of the International Journal for Quality in Health Care (impact factor 2.6) from 2015 - 2019.
He holds a Master degree in Medical Sociology (University of Bielefeld, Germany), a Master of Science degree in Public Health (LSHTM) and a PhD in Public Health (University of Barcelona, UPF) and holds further certificates from prestigious institutions such as the Joint Commission International, Harvard School of Public Health, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Previous appointments include a seven year tenure at the World Health Organization where he led the ‘Quality of Health Systems and Services Programme’, a four year tenure as Director of Research and Education at the Avedis Donabedian Research Institute, Autonomous University of Barcelona, and a four year Senior Lectureship (Associate Professor) in Health Services Research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is also Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie University, Sydney and member of the scientific advisory board of the Cologne Center for Ethics, Rights, Economics, and Social Sciences of Health (CERES).
