Dr. Xu works mainly in the field of health policy and systems research. He is interested in using cross-disciplinary approach to study the transition of health systems and evaluation of complex interventions, with a particular focus on the balance between hospitals and primary care providers in China. He received his PhD from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). He has been leading or participated in various research projects funded by the World Health Organization, National Natural Science Foundation of China, the China Medical Board, National Health Commission of China, Peking University, University of Manchester, etc. He was a board member (representing western pacific region) of the Emerging Voices for Global Health (Health System Global) and a Fellow of the Equity Initiative. He has published in Lancet, BMJ, PLoS Mediciene, Social Science & Medicine, Health Policy & Planning, etc. He is also an editorial advisor to Health Policy and Planning and also reviewed papers for the BMJ, Social Science and Medicine, Health Policy, International Journal of Equity in Health, etc.
